*The Buckley Fund of Community  Foundation Sonoma County awarded a grant of $5,000 to the Nkhanga Library. The purpose of this grant is to support the Nkhanga Village Library in honor of Greg and Sara Shorin of Lake Tahoe in California.

Activities

Zambia Knowledge Bank Nkhanga Library has introduced a nursery or kindergarten school that is being run by three volunteer teachers. Children that are enrolled at Zambia Knowledge Bank Nkhanga Library come from different villages from Nkhanga while some come from within Nkhanga.

  • The school was officially opened in 2014 and has been operating well.
  • The total number of pupils is 52 of which 34 are girls and 18 are boys.
  • Pupils are really responding well and ready to learn; though some few parents are resistant to bring their children.
  • Just after the school was opened a lot of children were enrolled but when they were told to be contributing a K30 or $3.00, some parents withdrew their children. Out of 52 children only 3 have managed to pay for school fees.
  • This school is operating under good conditions when it comes to hygiene it is excellent. Teachers are doing their best to help these children and teachers have really been highly praised or commended for their good work because those nursery or kindergarten students who have graduated and enrolled for grade one at different schools are doing well in class. They are able to read and write.

Needs

  • The nursery or kindergarten school is operating without proper furniture that can fit the children. Hence there is need to buy chairs and tables for the school.

  • The nursery is operating without teaching materials and teaching aids.
  • There is need for teachers to attend a small workshop so that they can acquire knowledge on how they can plan their work and write their lesson plan because at the moment they just teach without planning and with no scheme of work.
  • There is also need to buy more books for the children or solicit (ask for donations) so that they are well equipped with information and knowledge, as you know foundation is important.
  • Children are taught in one large class and teaching is a challenge for the teachers, because these children are supposed to be divided into three classes; that is baby class, reception class, and foundation class but there are no classes hence a classroom block will be ideal. These children make so much noise and if they can be far from the library it can be ideal.
  • They will be needing to buy a vehicle to help with movement, travel and ease of work.
  • There is need to have income generating activities such as a vegetable garden and poultry. A borehole is in full operation and watering may not be an issue but what will be needed is just a starter.

  • For a poultry growing project, what will be needed is building feeders and drinkers.
  • There is need to introduce a school uniforms for identity of the students in case anything happens to the children it will be easy to identify them.
  • Education tours to the nearby town of Lundazi or even the Game Park in Mfuwe along the Luangwa River may also help to expose the children.
  • Adult literacy education is underway to be introduced so as to help the community with knowledge and to increase literacy levels.

Library Needs

  • The Library is in need of new books, as you know the Library has been depending on donated books which has also made it difficult for certain readers to appreciate the Library services. Donated books are good but mostly the receiver has no choice but to get what has been given unlike when you buy, you buy books that are of interest to the Library patrons.
  • Our Zambian schools syllabus is dynamic as a result certain books that the Library has do not match with our schools syllabus and needs. Hence there is need to purchase new books for the Library time after time.

  • The Library is also in need of furniture, the furniture that is there does not suit the children.
  • The Library is also in need of solar panels and solar batteries for lighting.
  • There is need to have the children corner in the library, creating a suitable environment for the children.
  • There is also a need to buy a photocopying machine, a printer, scanning machine and a computer to ease some work at the Library.
  • The Library is in need of tools for processing books, these tools are the sears list of subject heading and the Dewey decimal classification scheme.
  • There is need to train Library staff if the Library is to operate effectively.
  • There is need to buy a digital camera for the Library, this will help the Library staff in sending pictures about all activities at the Library.
  • There is need to build up shelters outside the Library that will be used for some Library users who have group discussions or group work.

Challenges and Recommendations

  • The local people do not have interest in using the Library. (Conduct outreach or Sensitization drives)
  • Only one person has knowledge about Library operations. (More people need to be trained)
  • No proper funding to support Library staff. (More Grant Funding should be sought)
  • Lack of books that can match with the Zambian syllabus and general interest. (New more relevant books should be bought from Zambia and elsewhere)
  • The other challenge that the Library is facing is cataloging and classification of Library materials. Books are not processed due to lack of sears list of subject heading and Dewey decimal classification scheme hence making it difficult for Library users to access books since the books do not have class numbers and subject headings (retrieval keys). Uncatalogued and unprocessed books do not save any purpose in a Library. (All the existing books and new donated books should be properly catalogued)

Future Plans

  • There are plans of building up staff houses that will accommodate personnel at the Library.
  • They plan to solicit for more books and other reading materials from other Libraries. As you might be aware the Library caters for different types of patrons. Each different patron may have interest in different types of books which may not necessarily be stocked in the Library. Finding out what each patron needs is the principle of the Library that can help meet the user’s needs.
  • They are also planning to conduct reading competitions, debates and book discussions just to motivate Library users. This can be effective when projects and other activities with be planned in line with information and books that the Library is providing.

  • They also planned to soon conduct sensitization programs and motivation talks about Nkhanga Library in schools and villages of Nkhanga area.
  • They also plan to open an account for the Library.
  • They have also planned to set up Library garden that will help to generate money for the running of the Library.

Introduction

This report outlines the Library activities and describes how well the Library has been operating since December 8, 2012 up-to-date.

  • The Library has been providing information materials to its parent community of Nkhanga and Lundazi as well.
  • To serve the community effectively, Library book collection has covered all age groups and classes of the people it is serving.
  • The Library has been operating well although it has not gone up or down but has been running at the same pace. Its clientele has not really increased because the Library staff (Library attendant) has been working with very little knowledge on Library operations.
  • Libraries do not exist in a vacuum but they have goals and objectives they have to achieve for them to serve their purposes.
  • Therefore it is for this reason that I decided to conduct a workshop to help the Library staff and the committee members with the basics on Library Operations, functions and types of Libraries

  • It was emphasized that for the Library to serve its community effectively there was need for Library staff to learn who composes that community and their information needs.
  • If the Library is to serve its purpose it must be recognized as an essential part of the learning center.
  • The Library staff had no knowledge about Library promotion; that is selling the information you have in the Library to the community.
  • The Library staff had no knowledge about Library cooperation and networking, this is the coming together of two or more libraries for the purpose of achieving a common goal or objective, this can be formal or informal. We included this information as well in our workshop so that Library staff would know that they can work and cooperate with other libraries in the region and the country.  There is so much information being generated on a daily basis in today’s world of internet technology. Cooperation between different libraries helps in sharing the resources each Library has.

  • When and if an agreement is made between Zambia Knowledge Bank Nkhanga Library and other Libraries, Nkhanga Library will be able to borrow books from other Libraries in the country they cooperate with and return the books back at a given time. It is not easy to have every book you need in the Library because information keeps on changing every time.
  • The Library has been operating without conducting motivation talks in villages and schools around Nkhanga. The people of Nkhanga and surrounding schools and villages have to be sensitized to fully understand what a Library is and its services.
  • If this can start with the committee then it will be easy for them to carry the information to the people in the community.

Catchment Area

  • Nkhanga comprises of 24 nearby villages that are within one hour walking distance. All these villages have been beneficiaries of Zambia Knowledge Bank Nkhanga Library. These villages are Bila, Kapinda, Njolonjo, Malonga, Mulopwe, Mwata, Chidesa, Limbalimba, Musalo, Kamuzati, Chikoya, Zabalwe, Chipeni, Chalochadonda, Saonga, Chitaonga, Kahonoko, Kabaye, Chawowa, Zakumowela, Sulubi, Zichoka and Enyasya.
  • Nkhanga has a quite good number of schools but as it stands eight schools have been using the Library namely, Nkhanga Primary School, Chasamwa Primary School, Boyole Primary School, Kamatete Primary School and Chimpelo Primary School.
  • The total number of men and women who have used the Library since December 2012 to April 2016 is 1204 (one thousand two hundred and four).
  • The total number of readers per day is 10 (ten) and the total number of teachers stands at 20 (twenty).
